Van Loan Steps Up Fight to Protect Lake
Simcoe
Asks International Joint Commission to
Recommend Lake as an Area of Concern to
Unlock Federal Funding
News Release
November 9, 2005
Toronto - York-Simcoe Member of Parliament,
Peter Van Loan, appeared before the
International Joint Commission (IJC)
yesterday to ask them to recommend to the
federal government that Lake Simcoe be
identified as an area of concern as defined
by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.
Many of the Federal sources of environmental
funding are only available to designated
Areas of Concern - which designations are
made by the Federal Government on the
recommendation of the IJC.
Van Loan pointed out the significant
negative impact from both invasive species
and phosphorous loading on the Lake.
"Both these issues can be addressed by
government action. However, until now, the
money as not been available because of the
way federal government rules are written."
Peter has been working together with
numerous citizens' organizations and groups
within York-Simcoe to focus their efforts in
a unified way.
"I believe as do most residents of York-Simcoe,
that Lake Simcoe is one of our greatest
assets. The protection of the
environment of Lake Simcoe must be one of
the top goals of all of us - and
particularly those of us who have a
responsibility in government,” he concluded.
