Getting Things Done for All of Us
Bradford-West Gwillimbury Times
January 4, 2007
By Peter Van Loan, MP, York-Simcoe
Since assuming office 10 months ago,
Canada's New Government has moved on several
initiatives to address the real concerns of
ordinary, hard-working Canadians.
We are delivering on the commitments we made
to Canadians, including priorities like:
- rewarding hard work and helping Canadians
get ahead by reducing the GST;
- protecting families and communities by
cracking down on crime, gangs and drugs;
- cleaning up government in Ottawa by
passing the tough Federal Accountability Act
into Law;
- giving parents choice in childcare with a
$100 monthly benefit for each pre-school
aged child; and
- encouraging and supporting healthy
families by introducing a tax credit for
children's organized sports.
We have implemented all of these measures
while keeping government spending in line.
We even made a massive payment of $13.2
billion against the national debt.
I was pleased with our new law - for which I
had been pressing for some time - to protect
Lake Simcoe's environment from invasive
species.
We also made progress on the environment
with a tax credit for those purchasing
public transit passes, banned harmful toxic
chemicals, acted to protect endangered
species and moved to regulate harmful
smog-causing pollutants.
Our New Government has taken action to help
seniors by introducing pension income
splitting, doubling the amount of pension
income that is tax free, and increasing the
age tax credit.
For me personally, joining the Cabinet this
past year provided an opportunity to help
ensure the interests of hard-working,
law-abiding, tax-paying Canadians (like most
York-Simcoe residents) were being advanced
by our Government. We are getting
things done for you.
With the coming of 2007, we have much more
to do.
The opposition parties are delaying much of
our tough-on-crime legislation. You've told
me you want to see us get these important
changes into law, so that we can deal with
the trouble crime causes in our community.
We still need to help families by cutting
taxes more, and keeping government spending
down.
You've told me you are looking forward to
the details of our plan to control pollution
and greenhouse gases.
You've told me you like the progress we are
making to build the kind of Canada you want.
A country where hard work and
entrepreneurship are respected and rewarded.
A country where people walk the streets of
their communities without fear.
A country where children are given the best
possible start in life and where
opportunities abound for them to turn their
dreams into reality.
A country that stands up for the values of
freedom, integrity and democracy.
It's a country of hope and opportunity.
It's the Canada we want to build together.
I am proud to represent you in Ottawa, as
part of a government that is getting things
done for Canadians. I look forward to
doing more for the people of York-Simcoe in
2007.
