Getting Things Done for the Environment
Canada’s New Government Unveils $2 Billion
ecoEnergy Initiatives to Help You Reduce
Smog and Greenhouse Gases
Innisfil Scope
February 6, 2007
By Peter Van Loan, MP, York-Simcoe
Residents of York-Simcoe are concerned about
their health and the effect greenhouse gases
and other emissions are having on our air
quality and environment. They have been
calling for action from government for many
years only to see emissions continue to
rise. Canada’s New Government shares these
concerns, and I am proud to say that we are
acting to strengthen the actions taken
earlier this fall to achieve tangible
improvements in protecting our environment.
Canadians must address the fact that the
greatest source of untapped energy is the
energy we waste. We must also increase our
use of renewable energy and we need the
science and technology to make conventional
energy cleaner.
That is why the New Government of Canada has
announced three ecoENERGY initiatives aimed
at addressing important sources of emissions
and air pollutants and promoting the use of
less energy and the use of cleaner energy.
We are investing in energy efficiency
improvements to homes and business, clean
energy technology, and increasing renewable
energy supplies.
Individual Canadians will benefit
financially and be able to contribute to
improving air quality and the environment by
reducing energy use through the ecoENERGY
Efficiency Initiative. Homeowners and small
business often lack the know-how and
resources to make energy efficient
improvements. Canadians will now be able to
access financial and other support measures
through the ecoENERGY Efficiency Initiative.
This Initiative will provide incentives for
150,000 homeowners and over 800 small and
medium-sized organizations to make
investments that will cut their energy use
and costs. This is an investment of $300
million over four years.
New technologies are also the key to solving
two of our biggest environmental
challenges—air pollution and greenhouse gas
emissions. With the technologies of today,
we cannot overcome these challenges. To meet
them, we need to develop the technologies of
the future that will focus on key
priorities, such as carbon dioxide
sequestration, carbon capture and storage
and clean oil sands production.
To ensure that Canada is a leader in
environmentally sound technological
advancements this government is investing
$230 million over four years to the
ecoENERGY Technology Initiative.
Advancement in science and technology has
made renewable energy sources a possible
method of reducing environmental impact as
well as consumer cost. Renewable energy will
be a growing part of Canada’s energy mix and
our investment of about $1.5 billion will
deliver real progress now in improving air
quality in our communities and the health of
Canadians.
These ecoENERGY Initiatives will ensure the
residents of York-Simcoe and future
generations of Canadians have clean air,
water, land and energy. This is change for
the better!
