By Peter Van Loan, MP, York-Simcoe

Last week, I spent much time speaking about the work of our new Conservative Government and our priorities for Canadian families. In addition to announcements and speaking engagements here in York-Simcoe, my role as a Cabinet Minister had me travelling outside the riding as well.

Huron-Bruce, Simcoe North and ridings in Toronto were some of my stops (all ridings the Conservative Party hopes to gain in a future election) as was neighbouring Simcoe North. I also spoke at the Ontario PC Campus Association Convention in Kitchener (several young York-Simcoe residents were delegates from various Universities). At that convention. I presented the "Peter Van Loan Award" which has been given annually to the most promising newcomer in the organization for the past decade. The award was inaugurated when I was Ontario PC Party President in recognition of my efforts promoting and involving young people in leadership roles in the Party.

At all the events I attended, the message was the same. Our government is getting things done for Canadians. After a year of delivering on commitments like cutting the GST, providing a choice in childcare benefit, and allowing seniors to keep more of their money tax-free, we are continuing with new priorities for the year ahead.

Our new priorities are clear.

1)  A federal budget that helps Canadian families make ends meet by cutting taxes and controlling government spending.

2)  Making our communities safe by getting tough on crime.

3)  Taking action and delivering results on the environment.

4)  Increasing accountability through democratic reform, including modernizing the Senate.

5)  Showing Canadian leadership on the world stage.

By focusing on priorities, our new Government is able to get things done that matter to Canadian families.

Judging by the response I received, from Port Stanton to Port Elgin; from Kincardine to Kitchener to Keswick; Canadians are happy with the direction of our government, and impressed with the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

As we prepare for the Federal Budget, I am confident that Canadians will continue to welcome the change we have been delivering - change for the better!
