Launching TV Ads
Innisfil Enterprise
May 30, 2007
By Peter Van Loan, MP, York-Simcoe
This week I had the experience of being
involved in the launch of television and
radio advertisements regarding our proposal
to limit the terms of Senators to eight
years. Right now Senators can serve -
unelected and unaccountable - for up to 45
years.
The campaign was launched as we marked the
first birthday of the Bill. It has
been delayed and obstructed by Liberal
Senators for an entire year now.
The advertisements highlight the obstruction
of the Liberal Party Senators, and their
refusal to change - despite overwhelming
public support for making the Senate
accountable and more modern.
They also observe that the Liberal
obstruction is occurring despite the claims
of Liberal leader Stephane Dion that he
actually supports term limits, and his
declaration in February that he had worked
things out with the Senators, and the bill
would pass.
Months later, the Liberal Senate obstruction
and delay continues.
I was the spokesman for the launch, in my
role as the Minister for Democratic Reform.
But it was great to have the help of Senator
Marjory LeBreton there - she has to deal
with the absurd behaviour of the Liberal
Senate every day, and did a great job
underlining to the media that a job in the
Senate should not be an entitlement.
It was, she said, unfortunately the case
that many Liberal Senators do view the
Senate as a Club, and the Senators as a
privileged group with a right to special
entitlements.
We don't share that view. That's why
we are running the TV advertisement, and two
radio spots, all of which you can find at
the website

Make sure you check out the dogblog - by
Kyoto - featuring the ramblings of Canada's
most famous husky! It will bring a
smile to your face.
It is a bit disappointing that we have to
resort to an advertising campaign (paid for
by the Conservative Party, not the
Government) to focus attention on our
Democratic Reform legislation.
Canadians want to see the Senate change and
modernize - but until we began this
campaign, few were aware that the Liberals
were blocking this simple measure to improve
accountability. That's why we have had
to resort to advertising. It shouldn't
be necessary - but I know most Canadians
hope it will work.
