Conservative Government Tackles Crime to
Make our Communities Safer
Today, three measures
of the Tackling Violent Crime Act are put
into effect
For Immediate Release
May 1, 2008
(Ottawa) - Peter Van Loan, Member of
Parliament for York-Simcoe, today, welcomed
the coming into force of three key measures
of the Tackling Violent Crime Act (Bill
C-2). The three measures are:
-
Tougher sentences
for criminals who commit serious gun
crimes;
-
Tougher bail rules
when a gun is used to commit a crime;
and
-
Measures to protect
minors from adult sex offenders.
"We are doing what we said we would do by
getting tough on crime," said Peter Van
Loan. "With the coming into force
today of these three measures, we can say
good-bye to the days of soft, lenient
penalties for dangerous criminals."
Two additional provisions of the Tackling
Violent Crime Act will come into force on
July 2, 2008, completing five important
changes to Canada’s Criminal Code to better
protect Canadians against those who commit
serious and violent crimes.
These two provisions will provide for:
-
More effective
sentencing and monitoring to prevent
dangerous, high-risk offenders from
offending again; and
-
New ways to detect
and investigate drug-impaired driving
and stronger penalties for impaired
driving.
"Our government is proud to have pushed for
these changes for the past two years,"
continued Van Loan. "With these
changes to the criminal code, families and
communities across Canada can feel safer."
The Government of Canada has also:
-
Passed legislation
to end conditional sentences (house
arrest) for serious personal injury and
violent offences, including sexual
assault.
-
Passed legislation
to increase penalties for those
convicted of street racing.
-
Introduced
legislation to tackle property theft,
including the serious crime of auto
theft.
-
Introduced a
National Anti-Drug Strategy, including
legislation that would provide mandatory
jail time for serious drug crimes.
-
Introduced
legislation to strengthen the Youth
Criminal Justice Act and announced a
comprehensive review of this Act in
2008.
-
Introduced
legislation to protect Canadians against
identity theft.
