Peter Van Loan Unveils 36 Projects for Lake Simcoe's Environment
Government of Canada delivers results for Lake Simcoe's environment

For Immediate Release
September 5, 2008

(Keswick, ON) - Minister Peter Van Loan, Member of Parliament for York-Simcoe and Government House Leader, announced a full list of 36 projects worth $1.9 million in 2008 alone that will help clean-up Lake Simcoe. These projects—valued at $5 million when partner contributions are included—are part of the $30 million Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund created by the federal government in February 2008.

“Our Government has worked hard to provide real results on the environment,” said Minister Van Loan. “We are proud to be the first government to take action on Lake Simcoe, so the residents of York-Simcoe will be able to enjoy the lake for generations to come.”

These 36 projects include:

  • $48,880 for the Maskinonge River Adopt-a-Watershed Project.
  • $36,120 for the Phosphorous Efficient Agriculture for Lake Simcoe Watersheds Project and $100,000 for the Management and Control of Atmospheric Sources of Phosphorus to Lake Simcoe.
  • $70,325 for the Zephyr Creek and Tributaries Habitat Restoration/Water Quality Improvement Project.

“This wide range of projects and partnerships shows people coming together throughout the Lake Simcoe watershed to protect the lake,” said Peter Van Loan. “The federal investment has stimulated cooperation and action like we’ve never seen before. It is a great beginning for cleaning up Lake Simcoe’s Environment.”

A second round of funding applications for 2008 will be open in coming days. “Community groups who have plans for projects to improve Lake Simcoe’s health should make application, “said Van Loan. “Through strong partnerships, we can make the formal investment for Lake Simcoe’s environment producing ever more results.”
