"Our government is taking steps to keep Canada safe," said Peter Van Loan.  "We wholeheartedly believe that safe communities make for a stronger and better Canada."

The Speech from the Throne set out the Governments plan to take tough action against crime including:

  • Strengthen legal provisions in key areas, such as youth crime, organized crime and gang violence;

  • Focus gun laws on ending smuggling and on stronger penalties for gun crimes;

"Tackling crime and ensuring safe communities are key priorities we committed to in the 2006 election when we first elected and again in this last election in 2008.  I am proud to have the opportunity to work on delivering on those commitments to Canadians."
