For Immediate Release
September 15, 2009
(Ottawa, Ontario) -
Peter Van Loan, Member of Parliament for
York-Simcoe and Minister of Public Safety,
will join Prime Minister Stephen Harper in
meeting with President Obama in Washington,
D.C., on September 16, 2009. As Minister of
Public Safety, Peter Van Loan will focus his
discussions on the management of the Canada-U.S.
border, and other important security
matters.
“We have made good progress on border and
security issues with the Obama
administration. We will continue to work to
improve trade, while at the same time
strengthening co-operation in combating the
terrorist threats we face,” said Van Loan.
“In challenging times, it is even more
important for our two countries to work
together for the benefit of our citizens and
to cooperate in addressing global economic
and security issues.”
While in Washington, D.C., Van Loan and the
Prime Minister will also meet with Senate
Majority Leader Harry Reid, and other Senate
leaders. A similar meeting with House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other congressional
leaders will take place.
Peter Van Loan and his counterpart, Homeland
Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, have
established a strong working relationship.
They have already reached several important
agreements advancing Canadian interests in
areas such as law enforcement, emergency
management, and national security threat
assessments affecting our shared border.
They last met last month at the North
American Leaders' Summit in August in
Mexico, along with President Obama and Prime
Minister Harper.
