Focused on Economic Recovery
Innisfil Scope

Canada's Conservative Government has made
the economy its top priority. With the
global economic downturn that took hold
almost two years ago, that became even more
important. Now, with signs of economic
recovery emerging, it is clear that Canada's
Economic Action Plan is working.
Here in York-Simcoe, we see evidence of the
emerging recovery. New stores are opening,
or under construction. Road projects and
recreation improvements are underway. The
nearby Honda plant has announced a new shift
and 400 new jobs.
These positive signs locally reflect a
Canada-wide trend towards recovery. For
several months now, we have seen positive
job growth numbers.
And the economy's output has grown. Last
week we learned that the economy grew 0.6%
in January, the biggest monthly increase
since December 2006.
Canada has now benefited from five
consecutive months of economic growth. The
retail, construction and manufacturing
sectors are showing real signs of recovery.
Our Government's stimulus measures including
tax cuts for families and businesses, have
been a big part of this emerging recovery.
Our investments in job-creating
infrastructure projects have people at work
all over York-Simcoe, and the rest of the
country.
Canada is emerging from the recent global
economic challenges better than nearly every
other industrialized country. But
while we may be turning the corner, we are
far from fully recovered.
That is why our recently announced Jobs and
Growth budget maintains approved tax relief
for businesses, reduces tariffs, and
completes year two of Canada's Economic
Action Plan.
As your MP, my top priority remains jobs and
economic growth.
This is in contrast to the Opposition. Most
of the time, they have ignored the economy,
using Parliament to focus on other issues.
On the few occasions when the Liberals have
talked about the economy, they have been
talking about policies that would raise the
GST, impose a carbon tax and recklessly hike
job-killing business taxes.
But that's not surprising. The Liberals
voted against all the tax cuts we
introduced.
As our economy recovers, we will also focus
on fiscal responsibility - cutting the
deficit. Our plan cuts the deficit in half
next year.
Canada is fortunate. Thanks to sound
management, we have the lowest debt of all
the major economies of the G-7. This
advantage will become even more pronounced
in the years to come.
That means that, over the long term, we can
have lower taxes than most of our
competitors around the world. And lower
taxes on families means a higher standard of
living for all hard-working Canadian
families. That's real change for the better.
