Peter Van Loan Continues to Deliver Results for Lake Simcoe
$335,000 Stormwater Management Retrofit Program

For Immediate Release
July 27, 2010

(York--Simcoe) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade and Member of Parliament for York-Simcoe, on behalf of Canada's Environment Minister, the Honourable Jim Prentice, today announced $335,000 for the Stormwater Management Retrofit project in East Gwillimbury.

"The restoration of Lake Simcoe is a crucial part of the Government of Canada’s comprehensive approach to deliver clean water for all Canadians," said Minister Van Loan. "Projects funded in the previous rounds have produced positive results and we are proud to continue working together with local partners."

Initiatives funded by the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund are designed to preserve and protect the environment of Lake Simcoe.

"Lake Simcoe is an important natural resource, as well as a regional economic driver, and this Government’s Clean-Up Fund to restore the health of the lake is an investment in the future of the region," said Minister Prentice.

The Holland River Stormwater Management Retrofit program received funding under round five of the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund. The funding provides for a new micro-wetland that will filter out contaminants and help remove more phosphorus.

"This urban residential area, located in East Gwillimbury, is an important part of the East Holland River watershed," said Virginia Hackson, Chair of the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.  "We are pleased to join the federal government on this initiative to improve our environment"

This investment to clean up Lake Simcoe is part of the Government of Canada’s Action Plan for Clean Water. The $30 million Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund supports projects within the Lake Simcoe Basin watershed. Funding is used to support projects such as the creation of stream buffers, tree plantings, septic system upgrades, and the promotion of best management practices for soil, crops, livestock, water, urban runoff, and municipal wastewater.
