Doing What We Said We Would Do
Innisfil Scope September 19, 2011
by Peter Van Loan, MP, York-Simcoe
This week, the House of Commons has returned
in Ottawa. As Government House Leader I play
a role in ensuring our government's
priorities are implemented. This job is made
easier by the fact that the people of
York-Simcoe share the same priorities.
It is clear that jobs and the economy is
your primary concern.
With the global economy still fragile, it is
important to focus on measures to create
more jobs and economic growth.
This fall, we will focus on jobs and growth
through a second budget implementation act.
Passing the Budget bill will help continue
to create jobs and complete our economic
recovery.
The bill will put in place important
measures from the budget, including:
-
A hiring credit to promote job creation
for small businesses
-
A tax credit for children’s arts, music
and dance lessons
-
The elimination of expansive political
subsidies of political parties coming
from taxpayers
This fall we will also move forward with
Free Trade Agreements with Panama and
Jordan. These agreements will reinforce
Canada's position as a trading nation and
give local workers and businesses more
markets to sell their products and services.
We look forward to working constructively
with the opposition to pass these important
bills which will help create jobs
When it comes to spending taxpayers'
dollars, our government will act in the same
way you would.
You carefully manage your household expenses
and make sure that you spend your money with
the utmost care. Our government is committed
to our Deficit Reduction Action Plan to make
sure that your hard earned tax dollars are
spent in the most effective way possible -
and to ensure we balance the budget by 2014.
During the election campaign we set out
other specific commitments that Canadians
will expect us to take action on this fall.
We committed to introduce comprehensive law
and order legislation including measures
long blocked by the opposition, some of them
for as long as 5 years now. And we committed
to passing that legislation within 100
sitting days. The crime rate in Canada
remains too high and passing this bill will
go a long way to reduce that crime rate.
We committed to improve our democratic
system by moving closer to the principle
that every vote cast should be of equal
value. We will introduce a bill that will
implement a formula that will see fair
representation for fast-growing areas,
including areas like York-Simcoe.
In May, you voted for a government that has
a record of keeping our commitments. And, in
parliament this fall, I will make sure that
is exactly what our government will be
focused on - keeping our commitments and
staying focused on the economy. Doing what
we said we would do.
