Peter Van Loan, Member of Parliament for York-Simcoe, today, welcomed the coming into force of three key measures of the Tackling Violent Crime Act (Bill C-2), including tougher sentences, tougher bail rules, and measures to protect minors.   

With spring, Parliament Hill begins to fill up with visitors- including many from York-Simcoe on school trips and family excursions.  It’s a great time to be up in our nation’s capital, enjoying the newly defrosted Rideau Canal, the slowly greening banks of the Ottawa River, and the blooming tulips of Parliament Hill.   

In response to an announcement today by the Province of Ontario of another study into Lake Simcoe, Peter Van Loan, MP for York-Simcoe, is calling on the provincial government to stop studying and take action.  

Last week, the Conservative Government’s Tackling Violent Crime Bill finally became law.  How we got it there provides and interesting window into the way that Parliament works.  Canadians told us they were concerned about crime in our communities.  We committed to take action in the 2006 election.  

The Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment, and the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Member of Parliament for York-Simcoe, announced that the Government of Canada is providing new funding to restore and protect Lake Simcoe’s environment.  The announcement of the additional $18 million builds on the unprecedented $12 million that was announced in Budget 2007.  This brings the Government’s total investment to $30 million over five years.
